From Consent Management to Privacy Runtime: The Next Evolution of Privacy Platforms

The first generation of privacy technology focused on documentation.

Organizations created policies and notices. The second generation focused on consent management. Platforms helped companies collect permissions and manage customer preferences.

These capabilities were important. They solved real problems. But they were built for a world where privacy was primarily about collection.

That world is changing.

Today, data moves continuously between systems. Applications consume it. Vendors process it. AI models learn from it. Customers expect transparency and control.

In this environment, collecting consent is no longer enough. Organizations need to govern how data is actually used.

This is where Privacy Runtime enters the picture.

Privacy Runtime extends privacy beyond collection and into execution. Every time personal data is accessed, shared, retained, processed, or used for AI, a privacy decision is evaluated: Should this action be allowed? Should it be blocked? Should the data be masked? Should approval be required?

Privacy becomes part of the runtime architecture of the organization. This represents a fundamental shift.

Privacy is no longer a record keeping exercise. It becomes an active control layer that governs data usage across the enterprise.

Over the next decade, we are likely to see Privacy Runtime become a foundational category alongside identity, security, and observability.

Consent Management was the first chapter. Privacy Runtime is what comes next.
